The strike action taken by members of the NUT on the 24th April 2008 put teachers pay and education back on the agenda. Across the country many more members took strike action than took part in the ballot. The very successful rallies, which took place across the country and included many of our young teacher members, showed that the NUT is at the forefront of the campaign to demand better pay and conditions for the vital job that we do. The ongoing campaign which also involved a lobby of Parliament in June is likely to include a further ballot in the Autumn term.
In Birmingham we had action in the majority of schools and the extremely lively rally and demo which was vibrant and very well attended. Hope you were able to be there (send me your pictures!). For our part we need to feel extremely proud that we are in a union that says teachers, and other workers, should not have our conditions attacked nor their value of their pay reduced due to the continuing rise in inflation.
The message is loud and clear:
Only the NUT is prepared to fight over teacher's pay.
If there are any of your colleagues not in the NUT, now is the time to recruit them.
Following it's May meeting the National Executive has agreed to ballot members for further action, including strike action in the autumn term 2008. On 9th June 2008 a very successful lobby of Parliament took place. Hundreds of members lobbied their MP's and were able to explain the Union's case for Fair Pay for Teachers and other public sector workers. Many received favourable responses from their MP's and a significant number of MP's have signed an Early Day Motion.
