24th April - What a great day!

Last week's strike put teachers pay and education back on the agenda. Across the country more people took strike action than took part in the ballot, and the rallies showed the NUT, including many of our Young Teachers, at the forefront of demanding better pay and conditions for the vital job that we do. As well as looking at further action to press our claim, the union will be encouraging people to lobby MPs over pay as well as a national lobby of Parliament in June.

In Birmingham we had action in the vast majority of schools and an extremely lively rally and demo that was young and noisy (send me your pictures!). For our part we need to feel extremely proud that we are in a union that says that teachers, and other workers, should not have our conditions attacked while inflation continue to rise.

The message is loud and clear:

Only the NUT is prepared to fight over teacher's pay.

If there are any of your colleagues not in the NUT, now is the time to recruit them.

Our National Executive are considering the next stage of the struggle. In the meantime the lobbying etc will help put the pressure on the politicians. One place to discuss this all will be at the next BANUT branch meeting. It will be on Thursday 15th May at the Tally Ho Conference and Banqueting Suite (Click here for the General Meeting agenda and map.
